The winter months of December and January were mild and rainy – with temperatures, especially the minimum temperatures, higher than the seasonal average and approximately +20% rainfall. The possible occurrence of early budding fortunately vanished with the return of the cold months of March and April, which thus guaranteed regular budding. May was unstable, with rain that lasted until June 15th (between May 1st and June 15th there were 37 days of rain, 70% more rain compared to the monthly average). From the second half of June the temperatures rose significantly, bringing some critical issues mainly due to fungal diseases – primarily downy mildew, with attacks in some areas in the lower vineyards.

It was necessary to constantly monitor the vineyards, carefully working the soil and intervening on the leaf wall in a specific manner for each vineyard and on the soil, where we favored the grassing and crimping technique to make the grassy covers absorb as much water as possible – to guarantee the right soil humidity and reduce compaction. As regards the olive trees, there were two critical issues: the rainy and foggy days in the first half of June – when the olives were in full flowering – did not favor perfect fruit setting for the “early” cultivars such as Leccino and Moraiolo.

Above average temperatures continued until October; therefore, targeted interventions with biological plant protection products were necessary. The vineyards and olive groves of Felsina have very heterogeneous characteristics, hence reacted differently. The correct and integrated management of the vineyard-olive sector was fundamental to guarantee the health of the plants and grapes/olives in the development phase. Thanks to consistency and timely interventions, production weathered the emergency well. The 2023 harvest was not generous from a quantitative point of view (approximately -30% production for wine and approximately -35% for oil) but excellent in terms of quality.

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-1281" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

2022

It was a quite hot year which, however, did not negatively influence the production and quality of the grapes. In the months of November and December 2021 there was a lot of rain (higher than the seasonal average of the last 30 years) which favored accumulation in the soil’s water reserves. The winter and spring were mild and with very little rainfall. However, April was cool, with temperatures lower than the average for the period and with several rains which allowed the vines to draw on good reserves of water and mineral nutrients during the summer months, which were hot and dry.

The attention and care in managing the vineyards ensured that the thermal stress situation did not hinder the correct phenolic development of the Sangiovese. Operations such as topping and defoliation were eliminated, soil work was replaced with mulching and green manure, all of these helped the vine to emerge perfectly from this delicate moment. The rains of mid-August refreshed the air ensuring a perfect temperature range between day and night, fundamental for the phenolic ripening of the grapes.

Our vineyards reacted well and arrived in excellent physiological conditions and with a perfect state of ripeness at the time of harvest.

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-1282" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

2021

A rainy January benefited the land by favoring the accumulation of water reserves. The winter period was less cold than other years with a consequent early budding in mid-March. At the end of the month, however, temperatures dropped significantly, causing the burning of some buds (in the lower vineyards) which led to a drop in production of about 20% compared to 2019. Spring was characterized by temperatures slightly above the seasonal average, with sufficient and well-distributed rainy days, which favored a homogeneous growth of the leaf on the vines. The first weeks of June were more unstable, with slightly cooler temperatures and more abundant rainfall. The summer months had high temperatures, but never excessive.

The rains of the second half of August kept the grapes perfect, allowing them to reach a complete and homogeneous ripening in the necessary time. From September to the beginning of October, high pressure remained on Tuscany, interspersed with only some rains at the end of the month. In June the trend changed again, exceptionally dry, with temperatures 2-3 degrees above the seasonal average, with maximum peaks of 33°C.

The temperatures in the summer months remained quite high, but the rains – especially in July – were above the average for the period and favored a progressive and optimal ripening of the grapes. In the months of September to mid-October, temperatures stabilized on the averages of previous years and the rains were well distributed. The harvest was characterized by beautiful sunny days, which favored a harvest in different stages of very balanced grapes, perfectly healthy, in good quantity and of excellent quality.

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-1285" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

2018

The 2018 vintage was one of the most heterogeneous in recent years. The winter months were characterized by heavy rains that filled the 2017 water deficit. The temperatures remained average on the average, with a moderately harsh winter and characterized by a wave of intense frost (up to – 13C °) that hit our territory between 26th and 28th of February. This phenomenon did not cause damage to the vines as they were all still in vegetative rest. Spring recorded temperatures above the seasonal average, with abundant rainfall, so much so that it has been the rainiest season of recent years. The operations in the vineyards have therefore been calibrated based on this abundance of water for the vines, unlike in 2017 many more early defoliations were done, the mowing and control of the weeds were done more intensively, the working of the land was reduced.

The summer was characterized by high temperatures but interspersed with storms that have maintained a perfect water status in the soils and consequently a balance of the vine. September was decidedly beautiful, the high pressure remained on our territory until October 10th. This allowed us to plan the harvest in a meticulous manner by making a double choice of grapes on all the company’s vineyards, we made a triple choice even on the most prestigious vineyards, going to select each bunch to increase the already excellent quality.

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-1286" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

2017

The 2017 vintage will be remembered as one of the most unusual in recent years. The winter was quite harsh, with numerous days seeing temperatures drop below 0°C. March brought the first spell of unseasonably warm weather, with temperatures exceeding 20°C for several days, causing both vines and olive trees to bud early.

In April, a cold snap hit central and northern Italy; temperatures in valley bottoms dropped below freezing, causing some shoots to wither and reducing the potential crop yield. Following this frost, there were only a few scattered thunderstorms in May (averaging 50mm of rainfall), followed by an African anticyclone that persisted until mid-August. This brought intense heat—including record-breaking temperatures in late July—and very little rain.

Despite these extreme conditions, the vineyards performed remarkably well: there was very little sunburn or shriveling, and—albeit with considerable difficulty—almost all plots managed to bring their grape clusters to maturity. Fortunately, temperatures returned to normal levels from mid-August onwards, and some rainfall revitalized the vineyards and olive groves.

Both the grape and olive harvests took place about 15 days earlier than the average for previous years, and a two-pass harvest strategy was employed across all vineyards. A rise of three or four degrees in the second half of March and in April, in fact, caused the vines to bud an average of seven to twenty days earlier than most years. Various vineyards showed significant differences, even if separated only by a few metres of elevation. This situation not only did not reverse itself, but actually intensified over the next growth phase, the flowering, and then, later, during veraison.

The worry about the lack of rain during the winter and much of spring was allayed, thanks to rains in June that restored water reserves in the vines. Cool summer nights prevented an excess of heat that would have brought premature ripening and threatened the complexity of the resultant wines.

Despite the early budbreak, the ripening was only slightly early, particularly for late-ripening varieties such as sangiovese and cabernet. The Sangiovese that was harvested through October 10 was of outstanding quality; a succession of rains in the latter part of the month slowed the harvest, but the quality of the grapes was good even during that period.

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-12820" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

2003

Winter and the beginning of spring were very mild. Nevertheless the grapes had to be selected carefully during the picking, only grapes of good quality were to be used.

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-12828" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

1994

Temperatures were very high in the critical months of July and August. From the second half of June the temperatures rose significantly, bringing some critical issues mainly due to fungal diseases – primarily downy mildew, with attacks in some areas in the lower vineyards.It was necessary to constantly monitor the vineyards, carefully working the soil and intervening on the leaf wall in a specific manner for each vineyard and on the soil, where we favored the grassing and crimping technique to make the grassy covers absorb as much water as possible – to guarantee the right soil humidity and reduce compaction. As regards the olive trees, there were two critical issues: the rainy and foggy days in the first half of June – when the olives were in full flowering – did not favor perfect fruit setting for the “early” cultivars such as Leccino and Moraiolo.Above average temperatures continued until October; therefore, targeted interventions with biological plant protection products were necessary. The 2023 harvest was not generous from a quantitative point of view (approximately -30% production for wine and approximately -35% for oil) but excellent in terms of quality."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"2022","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"It was a quite hot year which, however, did not negatively influence the production and quality of the grapes. In the months of November and December 2021 there was a lot of rain (higher than the seasonal average of the last 30 years) which favored accumulation in the soil’s water reserves. The winter and spring were mild and with very little rainfall. However, April was cool, with temperatures lower than the average for the period and with several rains which allowed the vines to draw on good reserves of water and mineral nutrients during the summer months, which were hot and dry.The attention and care in managing the vineyards ensured that the thermal stress situation did not hinder the correct phenolic development of the Sangiovese. Operations such as topping and defoliation were eliminated, soil work was replaced with mulching and green manure, all of these helped the vine to emerge perfectly from this delicate moment. The rains of mid-August refreshed the air ensuring a perfect temperature range between day and night, fundamental for the phenolic ripening of the grapes.Our vineyards reacted well and arrived in excellent physiological conditions and with a perfect state of ripeness at the time of harvest."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"2021","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"A rainy January benefited the land by favoring the accumulation of water reserves. February and March were characterized by temperatures in the seasonal average with the exception of the last days of the month when temperatures increased (reaching even 20 degrees). Spring was generally regular, cooler than previous years and with well distributed rains, with the exception of a few days at the beginning of April, when the temperature dropped suddenly, reaching – in the nights between April 7th and 9th – a few degrees below 0°C. This episode caused a slowdown in the budding of the vines without causing particular damage, with the exception of a vineyard where budding was already in progress.The summer recorded temperatures in the average of recent years, with the exception of a few days around June 20th, where temperatures rose to almost 30 °C. This episode had a negative impact on the olive trees that had already reached flowering, thus compromising the quantity of olives produced. In August there were two episodes of heavy rain which were of great benefit to the vineyards.In September there was a sharp decrease in temperatures with decidedly cool nights, excellent temperature ranges and several rains, which allowed the grapes to gradually ripen until the harvest, which began at the end of September and ended in the first ten days of October."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"2020","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"The 2020 vintage is to be considered very good, with peaks of excellence. This phenomenon did not cause damage to the vines as they were all still in vegetative rest. Spring recorded temperatures above the seasonal average, with abundant rainfall, so much so that it has been the rainiest season of recent years. The operations in the vineyards have therefore been calibrated based on this abundance of water for the vines, unlike in 2017 many more early defoliations were done, the mowing and control of the weeds were done more intensively, the working of the land was reduced.The summer was characterized by high temperatures but interspersed with storms that have maintained a perfect water status in the soils and consequently a balance of the vine. A mild winter with just the right amount of rain was followed by a spring with below-average temperatures and large amounts of rain, which slowed down the first stages of vine growth and lessened fruit set somewhat. The last ten days of June saw improved conditions and ripening grew apace. The summer heat in fact led to fears of heat stress in the vines, but that fear was dissipated by mid-August rains, which allowed the vines to breathe and gave them renewed energy.Higher temperatures quickly arrived, in the latter part of August, and significant day-night temperature ranges led to notable sugar accumulation and to the development of crisp, fruity aromas that gave the grapes a vibrant, fresh-tasting charge. Pre-harvest weather remained favourable, with cool nights and practically no rain. The result was a return, after so many years of early harvests, to a more normal ripening pattern for Chianti Classico; we began picking sangiovese in mid-September and finished in mid-October. A rise of three or four degrees in the second half of March and in April, in fact, caused the vines to bud an average of seven to twenty days earlier than most years. Various vineyards showed significant differences, even if separated only by a few metres of elevation. This situation not only did not reverse itself, but actually intensified over the next growth phase, the flowering, and then, later, during veraison.The worry about the lack of rain during the winter and much of spring was allayed, thanks to rains in June that restored water reserves in the vines. These months saw a drop in temperatures too, which slowed the growth process somewhat, but July’s heat restored a more normal pace. Cool summer nights prevented an excess of heat that would have brought premature ripening and threatened the complexity of the resultant wines.Despite the early budbreak, the ripening was only slightly early, particularly for late-ripening varieties such as sangiovese and cabernet.
